Sometimes it's a control thing, as their ego might get between you and their true feelings. If they say that they want you back that would mean that they would have to resolve the breakup issue and confront their feelings, which is why they probably want you to go to them, saving them the trouble. That is, however, assuming that the the ex couple still want to be a couple.
