Milkweed bugs use their antennae to feel their environment. All insects have antennae and use them in much the same manner. Some insects use their antennae to hear and many can use them to smell things.

Milkweed is poisonous. As the caterpillars feed on it, they store the toxins in their own bodies and become poisonous themselves. They even take the toxins to their butterfly form, which is why monarchs are bright orange and black! Nothing will eat them because they taste so foul.
