In the old days, Everyone thought it be because the sharks were guarding sunken treasures or haunting the vessel. The truth is actually the complete opposite.
Shipwrecks act as an artificial reef which offers a home to many marine animals, the most abundant being fish. Which brings in bigger predators like sharks, groupers, barracuda... It may also offer hiding places and spawning spots for many sharks.
Mainly you'll see Sharks, thats really the only real dangerous creature around shipwrecks, then theres octopus', and then the not really harmless one's are schools of fish, and other fishes. If you go Diving, Be Careful (:

Most shark dives in Hawaii are with Galapagos Sharks which are most active in the morning. On the North Shore we went out at 8:30am and had around 20 of these sharks around the cage.

This is actually not true at all times or for all sharks. It is true that most sharks need moving water in order to breathe, but there are underwater currents where sharks can stop, because the water is moving around them.
