Some choose to do and say hateful things over the internet because of the anonymity. Not many can figure out names and faces over comments made, so it's an easy way to get away with doing something bad.
The reason some love the anonymity is because they couldn't muster up the gull to say the hateful things to someones face, especially in public, because they are afraid of what others might say. They know how they will be looked down upon and they cannot handle that kind of scrutiny though they are all too happy to dish it out.
Others use the anonymity as a way not to feel guilty in the end. They may feel like taking out their aggression on someone in particular or sometimes a particular group of people by class, race, gender, etc. For the group they may have hidden disdain for, they use the Internet to say hateful things without feeling like they hurt anyone in particular, and for any particular person or group, they may have a feeling there is no way any consequence will come back to them.
