Medieval Europe was a mess at the start of the 11th century. Pillages death, murder, stealing, these were all a part of life back than.
In 1095 the emperor of Constantinople was being threatened by the Turks who was allied to the Egyptians at the time. So the emperor wrote a letter of request to the pope that asked for Europe's greatest knights to come and help.
The pope saw this as an opportunity to change his fellow catholics ways and to unite Europe The pope called a gathering in France of all Catholics who were looking for a better life style.
He said on to them that if they joined they would have a golden pass into heaven.
So the armies of Europe who were more like bandits formed together and marched on the city of Constantinople They marched for 6 months and when they got there the emperor was expecting about 10000 men but was surprised at the site of almost 300000 men.
So the people joined mostly to get forgiveness for what they have done to there fellow Europeans
