Mount St. Helens and the surrounding area have long been renowned for their beauty, making it a nice place to live, especially if you wanted to be away from crowded cities. The volcano itself had not erupted in living memory, so very few people were worried until it started showing signs of activity.

There is good soil as the land is very vertile due to the volcano. Also scienctists like to observe it to find out more information about the volcano.
