In today's world there are still a number of countries that oppress their own people. Generally speaking, an oligarchy or a Dictatorship run by the dictator leader and his close knit friends seek to retain power and wealth. By having a totalitarian government, it prevents other people in the country to legally gain any power. The ruling entity may also wish to insure that only a State sponsored religion is practiced there and all other ones are banned. In general it can be said that the leaders in these types of governments do not respect human rights.
