Well, they actually have a valid point there. WWI was called the "Great War" until WWII came along; then it got re-titled WWI.
WWI was not nearly as global as WWII was. The land war of WWI was fought almost entirely in Europe, but the naval battles occurred in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
Apparently, the French and Indian War was fought about the same way, but involved even more land fighting around the world than did WWI.
If World War I qualifies as a "World War" based upon scattered fighting thru-out the globe; those very same standards might have to apply to the French and Indian War also.
Those arguments aside; the only "true" world war ever fought was WWII. And that war went global when America entered into it on 07 December 1941.
