You call it a semi because it pulls a semi trailer.
A semi is a type of trailer. A semi-trailer, as opposed to a full trailer, means it only has axles at the rear of the trailer and a full trailer has axles at the front and rear of the trailer. We call these in the UK "drags", as in wagon and drag, where the wagon that pulls the drag can carry a load on its own, whereas the semi-trailer truck, or tractor unit cannot carry anything without a trailer.
A semi-trailer truck usually has eighteen wheels. For this reason, many people call semitrailers "18-wheelers". They're also known as "mack trucks", "tractor-trailers", and "big rigs".

the fifth wheel
Trucks for performing haulage--which is supposed to mean any kind of commercial transport but usually means carrying gravel, garbage and other such loads. In the US we call these vocational trucks. A heavy haulage truck, which is also known as a fifth wheel trucking system or ballast truck, is a vehicle designed to handle much larger equipment and haulage loads than your standard semi or tractor trailer.

You can call a semi truck company by locating they're information in a phone book or online. You can go to a company and get a brochure or talk to a representative from the company.
They just call it a tractor.
This is called a CAP as in Truck Cap. They usually have a "boot seal" which is a gasket (kind of like the door gasket-rubber seal your vehicle has) that keep it sealed the the vehicle's cab and or cushioned for vibration, noise etc. They can also be called "shells". A half-size one that extends from the back of the truck's cab and maybe about 30" back (not covering the full box obviously) is called a Sleeper Cap as in like the ones behind a tractor trailer "Semi". A sleeper cap is great if your truck has a slider window that you can remove and just enter from the truck's interior or store stuff in there-groceries, pets etc.
If the "tractor" is a semi tractor, the only place in Joplin to go is 4 State Trucks, which is off I-44 Exit 4 across from Pilot and Petro. (I think it really is the only place!) If it's a farm tractor, call them up and tell them what you need, and they'll know where to go.

Exchange information with the other drivers involved in the accident. Get their license numbers and insurance information.
