I wondered because I just saw a funny stand-up routine, which asked that very question, why? What are you supposed to reply? "Yes, it is a bottle"? They don't show you a picture of a cow before they serve a hamburger, do they?

Well, meanwhile I have actually been able to find out the answer elsewhere. There are two reasons; first you need to confirm it is the right bottle and they're not bringing you something else. Second you should look for cracks in the bottle or other signs that it has been improperly stored such as mold on it.

PS. Another fun comment from that show, was why is the customer asked to test if the wine is bad (the tasting)? Shouldn't they be making sure they are serving good stuff themselves? They don't ask the customer to taste the cream for the coffee if they think it smells funny, but for wine they do!

What is of bottle Value chateau la fete 1981 wine?

I do not know if this is factual, but in conversation with a reliable wine resource, it was said that the restaurant price for a 1981 Chateau la Fete is $400.00 to $500.00 per bottle. Assuming the restaurant is using a 4x markup, the wine shop price would be about $100.00 to $125.00 per bottle.

Customer can take home an unfinished bottle of wine if the restaurant complies to the wine doggy bag laws varying from state to state. Usually customers have to purchase a bottle of wine with a full meal. Then restaurant must securely seal the bottle by placing it into a one-time use tamper-evident clear bag, along with the receipt of the wine inside the bag. www.winedoggybag.com sells these clear wine bottle bags in 750ml or 1.5L sized bags.

If a bottle of wine is purchased in a restaurant but not fully consumed is it legal to leave the restaurant with it?

Yes.You must speak with your server, sometimes the manager, about taking the bottle home. They will "re-cork" the bottle, which means they push the cork far enough into the bottle so that it cannot be opened once you are in your vehicle. The only liability is having an open container in your vehicle so the restaurant will make sure that the bottle is prepped and usually covered before it leaves the premises.Hope this helps!
