Why do we not get burned by the ultra violet rays of the sun when you get higher and higher on the mountains?

I've lived in the mountains my entire life, this is what I know....... In the mountains there is less oxegen. The atmosphere seems to be thinner, therefore we actually burn easier. The higher the altitude the less oxegen and the thinner the atmosphere. The occurence of less oxegen in the air is what causes altitude sickness.
