If wombats moved to other places, they would come into contact with placental mammals, which would eat all of the food that the wombat might eat, and perhaps eat the wombat, thus making it die out.

The simple answer is that wombats cannot climb.Wombats are uniquely adapted for digging, so they live in burrows. Although they have very sharp claws, and their closest living relative is the koala, their bodies are too heavy and cumbersome to allow them to climb trees.
