Each mouthful should be chewed no less than 20 times. I have no doubt the lack of proper chewing causes stomach problems and creates gas (people who eat fast swallow in air as they eat.)

Some weight loss specialists advise to chew each bite 30 times. In other words, until the food in your mouth is liquid. They say to do this with foods which melt quickly also, including ice cream. There are several reasons for this is, including digestion, as mentioned earlier. It takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain it is full and has had enough. If you chew your food (or wallow it around in your mouth while you count to 30,) your taste buds will become satisfied, whereas, if you chew a couple of times and swallow quickly, your taste buds have no time to acknowledge the taste and will continue to demand more. Therefore, you will not only crave less food, you will also eat less. This will result in a weight loss over time, and you will be healthier all around.

So you don't get choked.

--------------------------------

More then that, the mouth is the first stage of the digestive process and saliva contains enzymes that start to break down starch into sugars. The purpose of chewing is to use the teeth to grind up the food into small particles. This increases the surface area of the food which then makes the process of chemical break up of the food into its constituents (digestion) easier and faster. Those animals without teeth (eg Birds) have a gizzard which does this grinding up process, so important is it to the digestive process.

There is no set number of times.

One should chew until the food item has been sufficiently pulped to allow you to swallow it easily.
