Absolutely not. If there is a strong smell of gas at the meter, call the gas company.

sounds like you use a bad mechanic a good mechanic would replace a cracked exhaust manifold to start with if you can smell gas,there is obvioulsy a leak in the fuel system. this needs to be found as it is a fire hazard
If there is a gas smell inside the passenger compartment of a car, there is probably an exhaust leak in the system. Have it checked immediately.

could be anything from an O2 sensor to bad wiring. Need to hook it up to a tester.
