The flakes are either soap which you have not washed out of your hair properly, or dead skin cells which is known as dandruff. Small amounts of dandruff is normal as the body sheds skin cells regularly. Large amounts of dandruff may be caused by yeast infection which causes the skin to die and shed.

Keeping the scalp clean and dry and brushing or combing on a regular basis will reduce the problem but if the dandruff is excessive a medicated shampoo may be required to kill the yeast infection.
