What is the difference between dandruff and nits?

Dandruff is a skin condition of the scalp that causes flakes to appear and is marked by itching. When your body renews the skin cells in your scalp, the old, dead ones are pushed to the surface. In some people, the body renews the skin cells too frequently for the old ones to be shed inconspicuously, causing a mass amount of dead skin to gather on the scalp, resulting in the condition known as dandruff.

Nits are head lice eggs. Coincidentally, having head lice can actually cause or increase flaking of the scalp, resulting in or worsening a case of dandruff. You can recognize nits because they are attached to the hairshafts and are usually present closer to the scalp. They do not comb out easily, and even when pinched between two fingers and tugged on may still be difficult to remove.

Dandruff, on the other hand, comes out easily and is flat. If you can scratch your scalp gently or brush your hands through your hair and white flakes fall out, it is dandruff. If there are white spots clinging to your hair and you cannot seem to remove them, they are most likely nits.

Do some shampoos cause hair loss?

Yes and No.

Manufacturers of hair care shampoos take the utmost care when developing their products and these have to undergo strict quality control as well as clinical trials on people with real hair to see that the shampoos and other products do not damage hair.

But even with all this care taken to see that shampoos are safe for use, there are many chemicals in shampoos, some of which your skin may have an allergic reaction to and cause your hair to fall. But the good news is that it will be a temporary case of "hair fall" and not hair loss. Once you switch brands, even your hair fall problem should be taken care of.

Real hair loss is due to hereditary, hormonal and dietary factors. If hair is coming out in clumps, or you notice circular patches of balding spots, however, that is a sign of real head hair loss.

Many times when people change their shampoos they pay more attention to their hair and scalp. If at this time their hair appears shinier and manageable they naturally credit the shampoo. In the same vein, if they see that something is not quite right and they are losing hair, then obviously the shampoo gets blamed irrespective of whether the hair loss has just started or has been going on for some time.

The fact is that whichever shampoo you use while washing your hair, you are going to experience hair fall due to the simple act of washing. The acceptable range of hair loss is about 100 strands of hair a day. This amount of hair fall is normal and does not constitute hair loss.

Chemical procedures such as 'hair perming', vigorous combing of wet hair, and brushing of hair can also cause you to lose hair and this should not be blamed on the shampoo that you use.

The fact of the matter is that although shampoos do make your hair fall, it is normal hair loss and there is no evidence to suggest that using shampoos results in hair loss irrespective of which type you use.

What are the different types of hair loss and their causes?

Different types of hair loss are caused by different things. Here is a look at various types and their causes.

  • Androgenetic Alopecia: This is by far the leading type of hair loss in men and women and is a result of genetics. This genetic hair loss is hereditary and can be inherited from either side of the family. Commonly known as male and female pattern baldness, this type of hair loss is due to the action of a chemical known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which attacks the hair follicles and causes hair loss.
  • Telogen Effluvium: This condition is also referred to as diffuse hair loss. In this type of hair loss, a lot of hair is lost in a short span of time. Leading causes for this condition are pregnancy, chemotherapy for cancer treatment, very high fevers, severe illnesses, and sometimes even high levels of stress can result in telogen effluvium. This is not a permanent condition and most of the lost hair does grow back within a few months. Some sudden events that can contribute to this condition are childbirth, surgery, and severe emotional stress (death of loved ones, abuse, accidents, or other traumatic events.
  • Alopecia Areata: Any sudden loss of hair resulting in bald patches is the condition of alopecia areata. This is an autoimmune disease where the hair follicles are attacked by the body. Why it happens has not yet been discovered. It can be a mild case and result in bald patches on the head or if it is severe it can affect the entire body hair. This condition usually treats itself without any medication although some doctors may prescribe certain steroid injections for repeated occurrence of localized alopecia areata.
  • Traction Alpoecia: This type of hair loss occurs in people who routinely pull on their hair through harsh brushing or hairstyles such as a tight ponytail that pull on the hair. One prime example of this condition is the braided hair popular with African-americans.
  • Medication Related Hair Loss: Certain medicines such as accutane, allopurinol, and anti-thyroid medicines are known to cause hair loss.
  • Diet Related Hair Loss: Temporary hair loss and hair shedding can result from poor nutrition and an unbalanced diet. If your body is deficient in certain minerals, vitamins, and/or iron, it can cause you to lose hair.

Can lack of showers cause dandruff?

Yes, dandruff can be caused by lack of showers. If you don't take enough showers, there is over activity of your oil glands. Shampooing daily will get rid of the oil and help prevent the dandruff. Therefore, if you don't take showers daily, you can't be shampooing daily, and therefore, your oil glands are producing more oil. Get the point? Also, some other causes of dandruff are: Stress, a high sugar intake, shampooing in hot water, low or no-fat diets, and blow-drying your hair.

What is the best way to treat dandruff?

To treat a dry scalp, the cause of much of the flaky, snowy dandruff, massage some pure virgin olive oil into the scalp and then brush vigorously with a natural bristle hairbrush to help loosen dandruff scales. Microwave the oil until its warm to the touch and apply about twice a week. Leave it on for about 20 minutes and wash it out with a good shampoo.

Another treatment is to regularly rinse the scalp with apple cider vinegar. Vinegar restores the scalp to a healthy state and is effective at cleansing off toxins from the environment that may contribute to dandruff.

There are many basic remedies that you can take to keep your hair dandruff free. A warm coconut oil head massage can do wonders. Apart from making your hair lustrous and shiny, the optimized oil levels keep the scalp nourished while the vigorous massage aids better blood circulation, exfoliates the scalp of dead skin build up.

A teaspoon of fresh lime juice in the last hair rinse combined with a light weight conditioner can also be effective to treat dandruff. Furthermore, this adds much needed luster to the hair as well.

In addition, an individual needs to keep off from strong teas or coffee, pickles, as well as refined and processed foods.

Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner at least 3 times a week.

Do not scratch your head when it is itchy because the skin cells on your head break off in little tiny flakes.

It really depends on how bad it is. If it is mild a simple tea tree shampoo and conditioner will help. like the Paul Mitchell kind. However if its bad, you might need a shampoo specifically for dandruff, there is a product called medi-dan that works really well but smells horrible.

The cause of dandruff is fungus, a bacteria that you have to treat. It is not contagious, and can be effectively treated by some topical solutions, like Luxiq, and shampoos like Loprox.

You can try some of the shampoo's at your local store or consult a doctor for a prescription shampoo.

Whenever you are using anything to put into your hair, make sure you use you fingertips and not your nails. I know it is very tempting but bleeding is very common. In fact it is almost impossible that it won't bleed if you use your fingernails. It will increase the damage.

And no matter what, NEVER EVER EVER pick at it hoping it will go away. That is about the worst thing you can do. Rub your fingertips against it if it itches.

What causes dandruff?

The cause of dandruff is fungus, a bacteria that you have to treat. It is not contageous, and can be effectively treated by some topical solutions, like Luxiq, and shampoos like Loprox.

The dry scalp is caused due to environmental factors and chemical treatments used for styling the hair. The main reason for the dryness being the depletion of moisture level.

Oily scalp is caused by the overproduction of sebum, by the oil glands in the scalp. This could also be due to the inadequate rinsing out of the hair. See related links below.

from your old shampoo or washing your hair too much

Skin on the body undergoes constant renewal. This means that each and every skin cell, once it dies, gets pushed out and replaced by newer, healthier cells underneath.

Dandruff is essentially this process. Those with dandruff have skin on their scalp that sheds quicker than those without it, making the dead skin "flakes" a lot more noticeable.

Dandruff also occurs when the scalp is exposed to extreme temperatures and cause the skin cells on the scalp to dry out and shed quicker.

To prevent it, use hair products such as "Head and Shoulders" that are designed to treat dandruff. Basically, aim for anything that will keep the scalp healthy and moisturized.

dandruf is caused by dirt that has been decayed by not washing your hair for many days
A common cause of dandruff is because of an incompatible dandruff or if the hair is not thoroughly washed.

How do you get rid of head lice without the shampoos?

now if u want to get rid of lice then wash your hair every day because lice spread in dirty hair and don't tie your hair when wet it smells and lice get attractive to smells and use vinegar and olive oil twice in a week and then wash your hair with anti-lice shampoo and sorry about telling about shampoo no matter you have lice or not just use anti-lice shampoo thrice a week and in that way lice will not be able to grow in your hair neither nits

The best solution - and not full of chemicals - is Desert Essence Therapeutic Treatment Shampoo - has tea tree oil, blue cypress and eucalyptus - buy it at a health food store. You first use it three consecutive days and then twice a week; my granddaughter used to get lice all of the time, but since we used this, no more problems. Plus, it does not smell too bad. Way more effective than those treatments from the pharmacy.
