Units are standardised measures. Standardisation facilities both trade and communications. Imagine trying to tell a dealer that you wanted a pound of flour if all the dealer dealt in were cube-shaped boxes of flour - in three different sizes. Neither of you could do a deal as you wouldn't know what was in the boxes. Or if you ask a person how far away the nearest town is and they say it is 30 minutes - you don't know whether that is walking, cycling or driving.
