Micro SD cards are used as additional memory. Mobile (cell) phones usually come with a small amount of internal memory, and a micro SD card slot - so the user can add an extra chunk of memory to store data. They are not essential - the phone will still work without one - but if you want to take photos, download songs etc - they will soon fill up the internal memory.
