New Answer:

In 1775, King George III instructed General Thomas Gage, the British commander in chief in Massachusetts, to enforce order among the rebellious colonists. Joseph Warren, a patriot leader, sent Paul Revere and William Dawes to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Lexington and the patriots in Concord.

They arranged for a signal to be flashed from the steeple of the Old North Church in Boston. Two lanterns would mean that the British were coming by water, and one, by land.

One of the main reasons Paul Revere is remembered, is because not only of his famous midnight ride. But, also, because anyone who goes to college, and majors in English or Literature has to learn about the famous poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who wrote the famous poem, "Paul Revers Ride."
