What religions do not cut their hair?

The most obvious are the male Sikhs of the Punjab, India, who do not cut their hair and instead wrap it in a turban ( a long strip of cloth tied round the head). Because of this the turban and the full beard of a Sikh mark him out as a member of that group (much like the circumcision of a male Jew, the wearing of a burkha of a female moslem, and the wearing of a cross or crucifix for a Christian. However, not many people know that certain Jews throughout history also did not cut their hair. The Nazirites were a Jewish group who were set aside as special, and dedicated to God. Nazrites could be set aside for a set period (like a month) or for life. To set them apart from ordinary Jews they did not eat meat, wore rags rather than fine clothes and did not cut their hair. The two most famous Nazirites in the Bible were John the Baptist who we are told wore animal skins and ate only locusts and wild honey (locusts were not regared as 'meat'!). The other was Samson, who, of course, never cut his hair. When Delilah's servant did cut his hair, his strength, which he believed came from God through his setting apart as a Nazirite, disappeared completely as he became demoralised and ashamed as he, although through no fault of his own, had reneged on his covenant with God.

Are Quakers Christians?

Yes. Most Quakers regard themselves as Christian, and the Society of Friends a Christian denomination. More importantly they are also regared as a Christian denomination by other churches.Quakers do not rely on specific creeds or liturgy for worship, but believe that the essence of worship is dependent on a personal relationship with God. This means that Quakers are very diverse in their beliefs and worship - from conservative evangelical Christians at one end, to extreme liberals at the other - who may or may not consider themselves orthodox Christian. However, for the most part, Quakers believe in Christian doctrine, and, more importantly, by their loving, peaceful and pacifist lifestyle, share that Christian love with others - a quality that makes them stand out as Christian brothers and sisters.
