Dickens experimented with names for a long time before hitting on the right one. Drummle, like Pumblechook, Gump, and Uriah Heep, was probably chosen just for the sound and the feeling it seemed to convey. It might make a reader think of 'Dummy.' And 'Gamp' might make him think of 'Dump.' Not scientific but Dickens had what amounted to a genius for finding the perfect name.
