They were the anti-war Democrats, who were in favour of a compromise peace.
If Lincoln had lost the election of 1864, McClellan (a suspected Copperhead) would probably have gone for this outcome, and the South would have got their independence.
on Thursday, November 19, 1863 and Lincoln wanted desperately to speak at Gettysburg. It was an opportunity to boost the Union's war effort and to solidify political support in the state of Pennsylvania. (eyewitnesstohistory.com/gtsburgaddress.htm)
After defeating General Lee first attempt to invade the North (Gettysburg would be the second and last attempt), President Lincoln (who waited for a Union military victory) announced the Emancipation Proclamation, the beginning of the end of slavery in the USA. President Lincoln waited for a Union victory, to give the document some credibility. Announcing the Proclamation after a lot of defeats, would be a wasted effort.
President Lincoln spoke about the Gettysburg address for two minutes. The Gettysburg address was a speech written to address the Union's war effort and to solidify support in the state of Pennsylvania.
the American Protective League
The Copperheads, or as they were sometimes called, the "Peace Democrats" were against the US Civil War. Their main base of support lay in the lower Midwest. They were also strong in heavily Democratic cities, such as New York City. Their persistent cries for the end of hostilities were increased in May of 1864 as Union forces were unable to defeat the Confederates. A Union fiasco which was an attempt to tunnel into Petersburg caught the publics attention in the North. The tunnel's exit was discovered by the Confederates and they shot the Union soldiers as they left the tunnel. Union forces behind them were unaware of the totality of the situation and were surprised. The Union lost 4,000 troops in this effort in July, 1864.The Northern peace movement of these Copperheads intensified. The huge losses of Union troops in the Spring of 1864, called for another draft. The Republican Party leader in New York City spoke for peace. To the surprise of many, the thoroughly Lincoln-Republican supportive newspaper the Tribune in New York City also called for peace.

copperheads were mid westerners that sympathized with the south and opposed abolition
The Copperheads were a group of Northern Democrats who opposed the American Civil War, wanting an immediate peace settlement with the Confederates. They were also called Peace Democrats, because they were in favor of a compromise peace. The Confederates believed that if they could prolong the war, and cause enough war-weariness in the North, Lincoln could lose the 1864 election. If so, the South might gain its independence. Unfortunately for the Copperheads, the fall of Atlanta in September 1864 meant that the Radical Republicans prevailed, and Lincoln was re-elected. By the time of his assassination on April 15, 1865, the war was essentially over.
The Lincoln Memorial is in the nations' capitol, Washington DC. It is a tribute to Abraham Lincoln. Rightly so, for it is through his effort as US President during the Civil War that the nation was preserved.
The Copperheads were the anti-war Democrats, and they had a lot of say at the Democratic Party Conference of 1864, when Lincoln was still looking as though he would be voted out. If the Democrats had won the election, there would probably have been a negotiated peace, and the South would have had their independence.

Because he admired President Lincoln and his efforts-APEX
As the US Civil War unfolded, it was necessary for President Lincoln to make generalship appointments. For the most part he used genius, intellect and character to make many of these decisions. However, the nation being as it was, Lincoln had to make "political appointments" to generalships. This usually ended up badly for the Union's war effort.
Did Lincoln find a chief of staff to orchestrate the federal war effort?
Andrew Johnson was never elected President. He was elected President Lincoln's Vice-President and ascended to the presidency on April 15, 1865, following Lincoln's assassination. Having been a Democrat most of his political life and findng himself abandoned by the Republican party, he joined the reformed Democratic party and made an effort to get the nomination for a second term, but was unsuccessful. Several years later , he was elected as US Senator from TN.
he said he was not intellengent.
