Actually, the Mormons did not prefer to be independent of the United States. After they were kicked out of Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois, they wanted to move to a land where nobody else wanted to live so that they could be free from persecution. This is why they moved to Utah. At the time, Utah was not a part of the United States, but was owned by Mexico. The Mormon pioneers still celebrated American holidays, decorated their homes and buildings with American flags, and set up local democratic elections. They believe that the United States and it's founders had been guided by the hand of God - there is even a revelation given to Joseph Smith stating that the Constitution of the United States was established by God and must be maintained.

When the U.S. Government sent soldiers to 'keep the peace' in Utah Territory, most of the pioneers were offended because they had already established their own local government and laws. Also, Church leaders had appealed to the national government several times in the past when they were being kicked out of their homes seeking protection of their rights, but the national government would not help them.

Who brought the first Mormons to the us?

Nobody. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) was founded in the US - so the first Mormons were already in the US! :) If you are speaking of the first Mormons to move from another country to the US, rather than the first Mormons ever in the US, the answer is still nobody. The first Mormons to move from another country to the US came from Canada, and were not 'brought' by any specific person, only encouraged to move so that they could be nearer to the main body of the church.

How many Mormons are there in the US?

How did the Mormons exhibit independence?

Historically, Mormons have been very independent. When they were kicked out of several states in the US, they moved to what was then the Mexican desert (what is now Utah) and established their own cities and towns from scratch. They have always been encouraged to be self-sufficient and to avoid bondage through things such as debt, pornography, or habit-forming drugs.

What historical events led to hostilities between the U.S. and the Mormons?

The short-lived war between the US and the Mormons occurred when the US government sent a non-Mormon, unelected appointee to the territory inhabited by the Mormons and announced without discussion that this individual would be the governor. The Mormons refused to accept the imposition of an unelected and unsympathetic government. The US sent the Army to impose the government's will. The Mormons prepared to fight back, and Army arrived, negotiations resolved the conflict, and no hostilities actually took place.
