The British had a policy of colonising countries for profit. Their approach was to take them over, milk them dry and move all possible wealth to Britain. The colony also then became a market for British manufactured goods.

This was not a new concept, having been popularised by ancient leaders such as Atilla, Ghengis and Alexander and was widely practised by most large European countries.

The Boers were reluctant to allow the British to seize their farms, gold and diamond mines and every other resource and to ship all proceeds off to make Britain wealthy.

Out of this reluctance came resistance and eventually warfare.

The American War of Independence followed the same pattern, eventually ousting the British.
