Look at the fuel consumption for a VW Jetta TDI and the answer is obvious, even with recent increases in the price of diesel fuel. Ford sells a diesel Focus in Europe, but not North America - yet.

There are other characteristics of diesel engines that make them more suitable than gas engines for trucks and large equipment.

What Fuels Can Be Used Only Once?

ALL fossil fuels can only be used once! When you burn coal or oil to produce electricity, or use petroleum or diesel to drive your truck, it's gone and you have to find some more. It's becoming harder and harder to find oil. That's why people are interested in electric cars.

What do most fuels contain?

The most common fossil fuels used to power cars are petroleum spirit (petrol / gasoline) and diesel. It could also be argued that electric cars with rechargeable batteries may be powered ultimately by fossil fuels as the electricity they use is generated at a power station which inturn may use a fossil fuel such as coal or natural gas.

What cars run on virgin oil?

There's someone crushing virgins and extracting their oil?? I assume you mean Virgin *Olive Oil,* and no cars run on any bio-oil, but we do use oils to make bio-diesel. Any vehicle that normal runs on diesel can be made to run on bio-diesel, but seeing as there are very few diesel engine cars on the road as is, I'm finding that it's very hard to find a car that runs on bio-diesel. Mostly, it seems, buses are getting the conversion.

What is the economic importance for cracking hydrocarbons?

Cracking hydrocarbons is very important because in order to power our cars and warm our homes we have to use crude oil which is cracked into smaller hydrocarbons which make diesel and petrol and other types of fuels for our homes and environment. :)

Why do you need alternative fuels?

Driving cars that use petrol & diesel has a significant impact on the environment. The every day use of cars across the UK produces a massive amount of carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas and a recognised cause of global warming. Not only does using petrol & diesel have a major impact on the environment, but oil supplies won't last forever. Some estimates are that existing oil supplies may run out in the next 50 years! Certainly, the amount of oil available is limited as it takes millions of years to be produced in nature. As a result, it's important to look at alternative sustainable fuels in order to protect our future.
