Some newer cars do this so that you cannot accidentally leave your lights on and run down your battery.

Simply start the vehicle with the shift lever in the Park position. If you wish to go backward place the shift lever in the R location. When you're ready to move forward place the shift lifter in the D position. Only shift from park to reverse or to drive when the vehicle is sitting still.
There should be a button on the left brake lever that needs to be pushed in, then depress that lever, then shift down and it should then be in reverse. My 1998 trx300 is this way. Hope this is helpful.
To shift the recon into reverse push the red button at the right break lever labeled "R" down and pull the lever back. Then shift down using the down arrow on the electric shift. Reverse light should come on and back you go.

does it shift into reverse and wont drive? if so its your tranny it needs to be replaced
push the red button on left brake lever before pulling it back, once the lever is pulled then pucs the bottom shift button and it will drop outta neutral into reverse.
