The first thing to check is that engine coolant / anti-freeze levels are not low.
Very likely there's not enough and the heater core runs empty as the coolant rushes to side of the engine during turns and cornering.

You should refrain from putting electric heaters near combustible materials because heat emitted from the heater is capable of causing the combustible material to blow up or catch fire.
