The Mercury Capri came from the factory with the wrong altenator pulley that does not seat the belt properly. Ford offered a replacement pulley with the proper specs. Contact your local Ford dealer and see if they still have any pulleys available. Replace the pulley and put a good quality belt on and that should fix your problem.THIS IS BECKY I CONTACTED FORDS PERSANAL SIT. THEY HAVE CONVENATLEY DISSCONTENUED THIS POLLY. THEY NEED TO CHECK TO SEE HOW MANY TITLES ARE STILL REGESTERED AND MAKE THOSE POLLY. IM STILL BROKE DOWN BECOUSE OF THIS.
The way the alternator belt raps around pulleys in the automobile differs by vehicle and engine. An alternator belt in an older vehicle usually just went around the fan blade, the water pump, and the alternator. Today's vehicles are more complicated and might require more pulleys.
You remove no pulleys. Just loosen the belt and then remove the alternator.
Alternators are driven by belts attached to one or more pulleys on the engine to turn the pulley on the alternator.
Not enough belt tension.
check your alternator belt, and your pulleys ,
Overtightening the belt, damaged or mis-aligned pulleys. Also, if you're getting a grinding noise while the engine is running, one of bearings in a pulley could be bad.
I am having the same problem with a 99 Protege. I have changed the alternator and aligned/cleaned the pulleys and the problem persists.I replaced the alternator, on my 1997 Mazda Protege, seven times before someone figured out why the serpentine belt kept breaking. It was the belt tensioner! It had to be removed and rebuilt. Now it is working like a charm!! And I havn't had to replace the alternator in over 3 months!!!!
Incorrect belt, too tight or too loose belt. Should be 1/4 inch deflection at the mid-point of the belt. Pulleys out of alignment or warped.
It transfers power from the alternator to the crankshaft and the camshaft to make your engine work.
The belts on the pulleys or the alternator are probably worn, or they may be contaminated with oil.
Put an 18mm wrench on the lower tensioner belt and rotate CCW to loosen the tension. Remove the belt from around the alternator pulley, and slowly release the tensioner. Unwrap the belt from all the pulleys and install the new belt following the belt diagram located near the radiator support. ALWAYS make sure the grooved side of the belt is contacting the grooved pulleys, and the smooth side of the belt is contacting the smooth pulleys (Idler pulleys). Groove to Groove -- Smooth to Smooth
Removal of Alternator PulleysOver the years I have ruined several an Alternator pulleys because I refused to spend the money to buy an Alternator Pulley Removal Tool.I finally learned the hard way, and for a long time have used the proper removal tool; no more ruined pulleys!!!!Due to the design of Alternator Pulleys, an ordinary "Gear Puller" cannot get a "proper grip" on the pulley flange, and the force necessary to overcome the friction of the force-fit of the pulley to the shaft results in damage to the pulley.Go to any auto parts supply store and buy an Alternator Pulley Removal Tool. They don't cost much, and are well worth it in time saved, and the cost of replacement pulleys. Then just follow the instructins that come with the tool and you should have not trouble. Good luck!
