Oglethorpe imagined a province populated by "sturdy farmers" who could guard the border; because of this, the colony's charter prohibited slavery. The ban on slavery was lifted by 1751 and the colony became a royal colony by 1752.

Under royal control the colony of Georgia changed rapidly. Slaves were imported, and cotton and rice plantations were established. And Georgia prospered.

It wasn't able to prosper or become self-sufficient under the trustees, and the trustees actually ended up just giving up. After they gave up, England took over and made it a royal colony.
