The popping of the alternator might be a red herring. It sounded like it was coming from there, but, later, it seems to come from the empty space between

the exhaust manifold and the water reservoir. I could not locate it, but its an intermitent sharp pop, a bit like high voltage arcing (which it isnt).

The spluttering and missing can be extreme, in first and reverse, and at no other time. In neutral, it idles smoothly. If it was due to a manifild vacuum leak, it should happen in neutral also, shouldn't it?

How does reverse work on a waverunner?

The reverse on a waverunner works very similarly to the reverse on a jet plane. A mechanism called a "reverse gate" drops down over the jet on the back of the Waverunner. The reverse gate changes the direction of the thrust so that it goes forward instead of backward. With the thrust going forward, the Waverunner goes backward for the same reason it goes forward with the thurst going backward. Note that switching into reverse at speed or using the reverse at high speed or using the reverse as a brake can rip the pump out of the back of the Waverunner. The reverse is only intended for low-speed maneuvering.

How do you put a 1996 z28 camaro 6 speed into reverse?

Start the car, and then, while holding the clutch in, move the stick all the way to the right as far as it will go and then up. You should now be in reverse. From there it's the same as starting in first gear, just going backwards.

Why would a 1992 Geo Storm 5-speed not shift into reverse?

Why does the speedometer not work when a car is going in reverse gear?

Because it is usually a mechanical cable that is connected to a front axle or the transmission. Newer cars relay this information electronically and will show the actual speed when in reverse.

A whine that varies with speed is usually the alternator going bad.

What kind of noise would an alternator going bad make?

Bad bearings in an alternator would make a grinding or roaring sound. If a Diode Plate is failing you might hear a buzzing sound in the radio that changes pitch with the speed of the engine.

On the speedometer, no. It will indicate a speed but it will not be accurate.
