Even if Mexico is the leading producer of sorghum in the world, it has over US$430 million in imports of such cereal (2010). The main reason is twofold:

1) Most sorghum is used for livestock feeding, and to produce beer. As Mexico is one of the largest producers of both beer and livestock in the world, it requires more sorghum than its current capacity allows, thus having to import sorghum from other countries, such as the United States.

2) Mexican agroindustry requires high quality seeds that can stand dry climates or pests. Due to the business model of biotechnology corporations such as Monsanto and Syngenta, whereas stems from these seeds don't give seeds on their own, continuous imports are a necessity.

Why are imports needed in Mexico?

Because Mexico can't produce all the products and services it needs. In fact, no country in the world can. For instance, Mexico does not have enough bauxite (aluminum mineral) to fulfill all its industrial necessities, so it needs to import such mineral from countries with an excess of bauxite, and willing to sell it. In fact Australia - the largest producer of bauxite and aluminum products in the world - is the biggest supplier of bauxite to Mexico.
