The Solomon Islands are a part of the Pacific Ring of fire and were formed by volcanic action where the pacific plate subducts (moves under) or collides with a neighboring plate creating a volcanic peak. This collision results in chains of islands like the Hawaiian Islands, Indonesia, Fiji, New Caledonia etc etc. If the islands subduct to below the water level they form as a Coral Atoll. Coral grows on top of the volcano and the broken coral creates the atoll. As the Mountainous ridge sinks the coral continues to grow up and add more coral to the island. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0107975.html https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/bp.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ring_of_Fire
