Because the design of the engine does not allow clearance between the valves & pistons without the belt being intact and the timing set correctly. If the belt breaks and a valve is fully open, the valve stops and stays open. The piston however keeps moving until the engine comes to a complete stop. This will cause the valve and piston to come in contact with each other. Result is a broken piston, bent valve, and in some cases a cracked head. Replace the belt at the recommended mileage to avoid this serious engine damage and the resulting expense. All interference engines have this issue but not all engines are interference engines. Most older Honda engines are interference engines.

A broken timing belt on a Ford ZX2 will not damage the engine.
