The reason a car engine gets hot is due to the heat generated from the combustion process. When the air/fuel mixture is lit off from the spark plug, you have the rapid expansion of gases that makes some heat, but most of the heat that is generated is from the volatility of the ignited fuel. I had once seen some temp. numbers, the only one that I can remember was that the exhaust valve and the head of the piston can reach temputers of1700 degrees F.
