This is a very popular internet myth. But in the first four years of his presidency, Mr. Obama did not ban guns nor did he ever say he wanted to ban guns. There is strong evidence he would like to reinstate the ban on assault weapons that was passed in 1994 and allowed to expire in 2004. There is also evidence he would like to see improved background checks, and restrictions on high-capacity magazines. But there is no evidence he wants to "ban guns."
Obama is very much into big Government and he is clearly motivated by power. Having the Right to protect oneself and his or her loved ones by means of owning firearms creates a society in which the individual has the responsibility for his own well-being. If a big Government politician such as Obama wants to get people into supporting him and his ideas, he has to create a good reason for it. By banning guns and firearms, instead of creating a sense of security and comfort he creates an unnecessary dependency on the Government. By convincing the citizens that the Government is in charge of their protection and well-being the citizens begin to rely on it and therefore they will look to the Government for more and more protection.
Frankly, this is a very smart thing to do in order to get more and more people on his side and therefore grant him and others with his ideas more power over the people. The biggest flaw in his thinking is that it is literally impossible to retain personal freedom while allowing someone else to guarantee it. Criminals will ALWAYS be a direct threat to one's personal freedom, and for someone to think that the Government can guarantee protection from all criminals is ludicrous. Fortunately many people realize this and are against such ridiculous assertions.
As Benjamin Franklin said: Those who will give up essential Liberty to purchase temporary safety deserve neither Liberty nor safety.

It has become a hallmark of liberals (and especially Democrat liberals) to believe that the social ills of society should be "controlled." Since you cannot legislate behavior, the next best thing is to regulate personal rights. Despite the fact that the right to bear arms is explicitly granted by the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, gun control is still a holy grail for many liberals. As we can see from the failure of Prohibition, taking protection away from law-abiding citizens will have little effect on the use of guns by criminals. Far from being a panacea, it would only weaken the populace, and would not eliminate violent acts and murders.
