Disconnect the neg bat terminal. Attach a 12V test lamp between the neg bat post and the disconnected neg cable. If you have problem the light will light up. If the light lights up leave it connected and go to the fuse block. Remove fuses one at a time until you reach one where the light goes out. This would be the ciruit with the problem. Now you can check the items that fuse protects for your problem. If you leave the doors open the interior lights will give you a false reading so you may have to remove the interior light bulbs or the fuse that protects them.
Gas in the tank? Voltage Regulator output is: ? Was the proper polarity observed when reconnecting the battery ... red to positive, black to negative. Bad starter motor - Any spark at the plugs?
If there is a spark at the battery when you are reconnecting it after charging that means there is a short in the electrical system somewhere. This could be bad enough to drain the battery in a few days. Finding the short may be difficult but it can be narrowed down by pulling one fuse at a time and seeing if the battery still sparks, and then inspecting the system that the fuse indicates.
Car won't start
It could be lights on in the trunk or a short someplace, your best bet would be to touch positive cable to the battery and if you get a spark something is drawing power from the battery, pull one fuse at a time and recheck the spark at the battery and when you have a fuse pulled and it finally doesn't spark when you touch the positive cable to the battery terminal you have found the circuit that your problem is in.
If you have no spark on the 1991 Subaru Legacy, you should check the spark plugs and spark plug wires for replacement. You should also check the battery and ignition for replacement.
Can only be: no petrol or an electrical fault = flat battery, no spark, electrical short, bad wiring.
Usually if there is no spark when trying to start a all terrain vehicle the battery is dead. Check the battery terminals or try charging the battery.
Best to unplug it and then disconnect it from the battery. Reason being is that if you disconnect it from the battery first you will create a spark. That spark could ignite any fumes from the battery.
No you do not have to unhook the battery. Althuogh you should do so anytime you perform any work on a vehicle.
disconnect the battery for about 2 minutes Answer #2 Disconnecting the negative battery terminal to remove the codes will also erase any stored operating parameters from the Keep Alive Memory (KAM) and cause the engine to run rough for a period of time (several miles) while the computer re-learns the information. CAUTION: Do not disconnect the positive terminal to remove the codes from memory - if a spark should occur when reconnecting the battery, the PCM could be damaged. - Haynes Repair Manual #36071, 1994-2005 Mazda Pick-ups.
If you see a spark then something is on pulling power from the battery. If everything is turned off on the vehicle then you should not see any large spark. You will see a very tiny spark because the radio presets and the clock will be drawing a slight amount of power, but if the spark is very large then look for something that is pulling power. A light on somewhere or a stuck relay.
