China thinks we celebrate a different new year! At one time each nation decided when to celebrate its own new year. They based it on astronomy. Some like the Egyptians made it when a particular star was in a particular position in the sky. The Jews put it on the first new moon after the spring and then the fall equinox. Then Julius Caesar revised the calendar for the Roman Empire and made it the first day of March. Then the King of France decided that it interfered with agriculture and made it the first day of January and Europe followed. Meanwhile, China ignored all the changes that all Europe made to their calendar. In 1912 China adopted the European calendar for the purposes of business and ordinary activities. It kept its own traditional calendar for the purposes of dating the new year and other holidays. It is now year 4645.
