If you turn on the ignition without starting the engine you should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds. This is a good indication the fuel pump is good but not 100% positive. A bad fuel pump can run but not pump fuel. If you hear it for run for a few seconds just replace the fuel filter to make sure it is not clogged. If it still does not pump have a fuel pressure test run to verify the condition of the pump.

Yes it does. But you can not run a mechanical pump on a fuel injected engine. It will not pump enough fuel to run the engine.
