The sun dips below the tops of the mountains, and throws shadows that make it appear that night is closing in. On flat land, the sun is above the horizon much longer, so there are no shadows and the sunlight lasts until the sun is well below the horizon.

In mountainous areas, the sun sets behind the peaks earlier than in flat areas, leading to quicker darkness. The rugged terrain can also obstruct sunlight, casting shadows and creating the perception of earlier nightfall.
