It is most likely the switch on the transmission. There are two of them, one is for the back up lights. They both screw into the left side of trans toward the top. The wires from both switches come up to the firewall and plug into the wiring harness connectors. Once the switch is out there is a nylon pin on the bottom that contacts the shifter rail, it wears and will not go in far enough to make up the circuit
in the back of the glove box, should be a handle to pull.
buy one off eBay or from a junk yard with the miles you want.

it doesn't have one you have to take the carburetor apart and bend the paddle on it. Then put it all back together. Then if it was not done right the first time, you repeat. Using a new gasket each time, or al least not more than once.
Under the car, bolted to the inside of the right side frame rail, back near (but slightly in front of ) the rear axle.
You can change the rear end of a 1988 Suzuki Samurai to Posi-trac by opening the differential and removing the existing ring and pinion gears. The Posi-trac assembly is then install and the gears put back in place.
There is a 'T' handle in the glove box, pull it and the hood will pop open. Release the safety catch under the hood in the middle and the hood will fold back to the windshield rubber stopper.

Check for a loose ground wire - sounds like lights are backfeeding searching for ground
the 1400 intruder didnt come out till 1987. nevertheless its at the back of the engine right near the battery box.
