sounds like the auto transmission has a fault
Probably needs a new Idle speed sensor

Yeah my 1991 Ford Tempo does the same thing it starts and idles no problem but if i stop at a gas station and leave it running and come back out to the car i put it in reverse or drive it dies every once in a while

It might be a problem with your transmission because not all mx6's stall when you put it in drive or reverse.
O2 sensor or vacuum leak
if it's a GM car tcc solenoid
because its a stick shift dumb asses
have your starter tested, the solenoid on the starter sticks sometimes
No you can't. The car will still overheard. Mine dies that now. And if u continue to drive you will blow your engine
