Why does my engine die when I switch to the front tank of my 1996 F-250 even though it is full of fuel?

there are 3 reasons for this 1, the switch on dash is faulty 2 the valve between tanks is faulty 3 the fuel pickup in tank is broken od clogged, not allowing fuel into system first i would check is the valve , this is found on the inside of chassis rail behind cab
