you have to remember that whoever killed Collins it was in the context of a very bitter civil war, neighbour against neighbour, brother against brother etc. the main political parties in Ireland today reflect the divisions of that war. to admit Collins would have drawn not just an individual but also his entire family into very real danger. the leader who opposed Collins, eamon de valera, who lived to the age of 94, is said to have carried a weapon for his personal safety for 50 years after Collins was killed. names have been mentioned but no proof. the dictum of the "Old IRA", whatever you say, say nothing, held fast.
All that's known is it was a member of the west cork flying column, who were mainly composed of people from the eastern section of west cork i.e. bandon, clonakilty and rosscarbery. Ironically enough this is the same place Michael Collins was from.
