Why is probably a good question............... The plate the starter bolts to seems to bend inward. The important part is how to fix it. Dorman makes starter shim for about $5 - $7 parts # Part # 02359. They are 3/32 thick. I actually had to use two but no more problems

Well you might want to check the wires that connect back to the starter. If you missed one that should be bolted to the starter it'll be hanging or stuck somewhere - most likely touching metal.
