AEDs, or automatic external defibrillators, are designed to pick up certain life-threatening rhythms such as VF (ventricular fibrillation) and once detected to shock (by direct current) the rhythm back into a more stable rhythm, ideally sinus rhythm.
In hospitals the defibrillators they use can shock people, but they can also perform cardioversion. This is where they use synchronised direct current (synchronised with particular parts of the rhythm; R wave, T wave etc) to convert rapid paced rhythms back to normal rhythms.
