Most automotive ac systems will turn on the ac anytime the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) controls are set on defrost even when the temp control is set on heat. By doing so the moisture in the air is removed and it will clear a foggy inside windshield quickly. As to the ac compressor turning on and off continuously, this could be a sign of being low on freon.

∙ 16y agoIt could possibly be because the fan relay is stuck in the closed position, even though your thermostat is not demanding a cooler temperature. This could be caused by the copmressor icing up for a long period of time causing the contacts to weld themselves together. This is only a possibility - hope it helps!

∙ 15y agoUsually that means that the system is low on freon. When the system is fully charged it shouldn't cycle hardly at all with A/C on high and vehicle at normal idle.
