This is typically an issue with a switch on one of the doors. Normally, it's a simple pin switch (much like you find on most refrigerators, that you can press to turn off the light). If the interior lights are not coming on when the "Door Ajar" indicator is illuminated, then I'd do a little deeper investigation. There is also a switch located inside the latch assembly on EACH door. There should be a wire connected to this switch. If it is disconnected it would cause the symptoms you are describing. The only way to check, though, is to pull the door panel off and visually inspect the connection. If any of the doors have been worked on lately check them first.

If your courtesy lights are staying on with the doors closed and there is no door ajar warning light , check on your dash to the right of your headlight switch. There is a dimmer wheel switch for your guage lighting , if it has been rotated all the way up that turns on your courtesy lights when the doors are closed
Possible faulty door switch.Try contact cleaner or light grade of lubricant on the switch. Push it i nby hand and see if door ajar light goes out.
98 ford explorer xlt dash light stays off y the switch is on
To the right of the headlight switch is a gauge light dimmer wheel , if that has been rotated all the way up , your courtesy lights will stay on with the doors closed. You may have tried this but i have a 2000 expedition and when it sayd door ajar its usually the window part of the hatch that's open....other than that I dunno
The door ajar switches are inside the doors mounted on the backside of the door latches
Basically, although all other doors are shut, there is still a small draft which is coming in through the closed door, causing another to open slightly.
The door ajar signal doesn't latch. If it doesn't go off with all the doors closed it means that one or more of the door switches is not properly sensing the closed door. This can happen if a switch is not properly installed or aligned, of course a switch could be defective or there could be wiring damage. Since the Freestar is just a renamed Windstar, the "Related Questions" below will be very helpful in diagnosing / fixing this common problem.
Door Switch is mostl likely stuck or faulty (inside door jamb- plunger like part)
Sticking door ajar switch ( mounted on the backside of the door latches inside the doors) or something not closed properly. To fix this, spray some WD 40 into the door latch assemblies, (all of them, including the rear hatch) and operate the doors a few times to free up the sensors.
Try spraying WD-40 on the door latch, the part that is on the door itself. The door ajar switch is located in with the latch. Had the same problem, door ajar light on, interior light stays on, and horns toots twice when you lock with remote, to signal door is not closed. Door was shut but truck didn't know it, WD40 fixed it.
bad door ajar switch inside one of the doors its in the striker assy
The Door ajar light is not run by a specific fuse. If your 2003 Kia Spectra has a door light keep coming on, you will want to check the connections to make sure that all of the doors are completely closed.
Just to the right of your headlight switch is a gauge lighting dimmer wheel switch , if that has been rotated all the way up it turns on your courtesy lights when the doors are closed. Also , if a door ajar light is on in your gauge cluster you probably have a sticking door ajar switch
When you open the door, you should see the sensor, looks like marker cap sticking out either from the door or from the car body, check all around, and press it, do this to all doors and truck, if you have a station wagon. If the door ajar still doesn't stop, than you need to remove this and replace it, or you can super glue it and forget about it.
make sure ALL the doors are closed
Just to the right of your headlight switch on your dash , is a gauge lighting dimmer wheel switch . Check to see if that has been rotated all the way up. If it has , that turns on the courtesy lights when the doors are closed If you also get a door ajar warning light in your gauge cluster , you probably have a sticking door ajar switch . The door ajar switches are inside the doors , on the backside of the latching mechanism .
Common problem, you have to spray the door lock parts in the door with WD-40 and sometimes you have to really spray for the light to go out.
If the door ajar light is coming on in your gauge cluster, and the warning chime is sounding when all your doors, liftgate, and glass hatch are securely shut you most likely have a sticking door ajar switch. The door ajar switches are inside the doors mounted on the latch mechanisms.
One of the doors is not completely closed, or you have a faulty door switch.
Does the door ajar light stay on? Try spraying the door latches liberally with WD-40 or similar product Operate doors a few times Spray door latches with a silicone spray
The word "ajar" means "slightly open." So if someone says a door is ajar that means the door is not closed all the way, it's slightly open.
