If the AC pulley is locking up when the ac compressor clutch engages, it's not a clutch problem, it's a compressor problem. But yes, the AC clutch can usually be replaced separately. The problem is, if the clutch is worn out the compressor is probably worn out as well. It usually isn't that much more to replace the whole thing.
if its locked, it has a serious problem and probably needs replaced
Because one of these factors is taking place -Coolent leak -expansion vaulve needs to be replaced -Compressor problem, low pressure -Thermistat inacurate
the air conditioner on out 1991 dodge caravan quit working. we changed the fan and it worked fine then stopped, the compressor clutch isn't trying to kick in. we need to find where the fuse links are to see if that is the problem
The problem could be the relay that goes to the compressor this could be faulted out causing the compressor to run constantly. However if this isn't the case then a quick check of the fuse may also resolve the problem.
There may be a fuse blown if the power vent windows don't work on a 1999 Dodge Caravan. If the problem isn't the fuse, the motor in the power windows may need to be replaced.
when unplug ed and plug ed the power switch relay will make click if supply is in working condition to circuit. so compressor if not working the means no sound then definately it is in problem.
I am having the same problem, if you figure it out before me let me know!! ryanthaking@yahoo.com. Thanks.
usually those high pitch squealing sounds are cause by a loose/slipping belt. just check the tension on your belts. the ac compressor and the alternator belt. also the ac compressor belt tensioner tends too rust and also make squealing noise. wd40
Same problem and question, compressor locked up. Battery won't keep a charge. Does the belt send charge to battery?
You need to check the exhaust at first. Then Check the heat shield, U-joints, transmission mounts, transfer case fluid and condition. Check to see if the noise happens in first and second on the manual range and if forward changes it. If you are experiencing this problem with a/c on, then the problem is the compressor itself. This condition may be caused by liquid slugging of the A/C compressor. This condition may cause an internal failure in the A/C compressor. The serpentine belt tensioner and serpentine belt may also be damaged. Replace them soon.
The ac could be causing the problem. Turn the ac off, and watch the compressor clutch to see if it is not engaged. If it is then the compressor or clutch could be bogging the engine down.
