Sounds like a thermo amp problem. Can't say 100%, but very common, inexpensive place to start. Part only available from dealer and will very likely be an improved (completely different) design. Only about 30-45 bucks. The parts guys will usually look up the 'service file' info if you ask which will help with the different design. It is located behind the glove box, which is easy to remove as an assembly with just a few screws across the bottom of the panel and a firm pull rearward. There is a small plug (red, I think) facing you toward the bottom of the A/C case. The wire goes into the evaporator case and ends with a small probe press fitted into a certain part of the evaporator core. The prescribed repair is to remove the evaporator to replace it, but some techs have good luck just opening the case slightly and making a little notch to clear the wire. The new design looks very little like the old one, so the parts folks did give you the right one. This will save sucking down the system and recharging it after putting the whole air conditioner back together. Good luck.
--update--just did this to my Xterra in July 2010...Part was $50. Took all of 10 mins and one Phillips head screwdriver to change it out---a 10 yr old could do it! Just remove the glove box (6 screws), then open up the black box behind it (remove screws and it seperates into upper and lower parts). Remove the thermo amp, stick new one in--I just Jammed mine wherever it would stay..plugged it cord in where the old one was. Worked instantly! A/C has been cold and steady ever since! Good luck!

Hi, I have had the same problem with my '98 Passat. The cause is probably a failure in the thermo-fan coil or circuit. When the thermo-fan is broken, the air conditioning will be overloaded due to the lack of airflow and will cut out. I have found that if the air conditioning system has been recently re-gassed, it will work during highway driving, but not during low speed driving while there is no airflow. I'd suggest fixing the thermo-fan first, then re-gassing the air con, see how you go from there! Good luck
