Some folks argue the government wants global warming to be true so they can impose taxes and reduce life styles. These folks tend to be misinformed conspiracy theorists.
In reality, many US congressmen (in both parties) are heavily funded by the fossil fuel industry, who have enormous financial incentives to NOT accept the findings of independent climate researchers. This industry has channeled millions of dollars to groups like the Heartland Institute to produce Propaganda suggesting CO2 is innocuous, and "necessary for life."
The Heartland Institute, incidentally, is the same group who years earlier published studies suggesting there were no harmful health effects from cigarette smoking.
In truth, no government WANTS global warming to be a reality. Coal and oil are cheap, and while oil may not be all that plentiful, we have coal reserves to meet our energy needs for centuries to come. It would be great if there were no harmful environmental effects from burning all this fuel. Governments currently impose taxes on fossil fuel consumption, so they have nothing to gain by faking up data indicating potential environmental harm. But fossil fuel industries have enormous economic incentives to claim there are no problems.
